The current epidemic of H1N1 viral infection has affected countries across the world. WHO has declared it as pandemic. The H1N1 infection situation at present in our country has made the people panic.
Point of collecting/sending specimen for testing for H1N1 is only at Government and Municipal Facilities - Please look out for more information on such centers in near future. Now, the Government has also recognized some private hospitals for these services. You may hear for them soon.
The idea is to MODERATE and avoid un-necessary testing Which would happen otherwise.

thank u doc for u kind reply...but my worry is since there is a back log of previous samples which r still not tested in case of emergency the delay in getting the report and subsequently delay in administering tamuflu wud and have proved fatal in many of the cases ..and another cause of concern is if thy administer tamiflu wihtout waiting for the test reprt and the person actually doesnt have the virus..eventually the next time when the person is actually hit by the virus his body wud b immune to TAMIFLU..wht is ur take on this???acutall the whole scenario of the govt handling the situation si giving me nightmares and am having sleepless night..my simple question is when pvt labs have the infrastructure and when ppl are ready to pay for the test ..whts the problem in allowing testings to b done..god help us!!

A difficult scene in Maharashtra as this is a new disease and testing as well as treating both needs STRICT MODERATION & OFFICIAL JUSTIFICATION.
NO NEED TO PANIC...
I think you can understand it better by reading the official govt. guidelines, please log on to: http://mohfw-h1n1.nic.in/ and read document on CATEGORISATION.
if you look at the case fatality rates of world over:
Deaths - 816 deaths worldwide in 160 countries
Europe - 16,556 cases with 34 deaths THESE ARE VERY LOW MORTALITY RATE...
Odds of
# death by assault in your lifetime : 331/1
# death by falling : 250/1
# death by firearm : 325/1
# death by poison : 1,400/1
# death in a car crash : 5,000/1
# death by choking on food or something else : 5,000/1
# death by drowning : 9,000/1
# death by murder : 20,000/1
# death by lightning : 71,000/1
# death by dog attack : 137,000/1
# death in the bathtub : 807,000/1
# death by a flood : 713,000/1
# death by falling out of bed : 2,000,000/1
# being killed in a terrorist WMD attack : 6,000,000/1
1154 people died (worldwide)
Odds swine flu- 8,000,000/1

However, in India, we have already seen 70+ deaths out of 2000+ cases. Why do we see much higher mortality rate (compared to Europe) in India then?

Keshab,
Please note that the total number of infections is ONLY when the doctors decide to test patients. In most cases doctors are treating patients directly without testing if they are convinced they need to.
Therefore the total number of infections may be far higher than the number reported. Please do not panic. Deaths happen in rare occasions and the mortality rate is similar or even less than that of regular flu.

seasonal flu mainly kills only those people which are already on verge of death.so dont compare fatalities of seasonal flu with swine flu as swine flu can target younger generation very easily, or if it mutates itself a little bit, then like spanish flu it will be targeting people with 'high' immunity rather than lower ones by making their immune systems over-react to infection, a phenomenon which caused about 50 to 100 million of death in 1918-1920.
may GOD save us all.

The present virus is having only one HEMAGGLUTININ site and that makes it difficult to infect humans more severely. And that is the REASON due to which the cases have been milder one with the present H1N1.Other reasons are difficult for common men to understand but this virus is not the virulent one as others of influenza group say for example H5N1-avian influenza.
The interesting fact of even present H1N1 is also to target 5-48 yrs. group mainly with mean age mainly between 18-20 world over. so that is quite different than PAST PANDEMIC EXPERIENCE of 1918.
There is no need to PANIC but COMMON SENSE measures to be followed to avoid infection.

WHO - SAYS on 28 august in its official pages...
Current evidence points to some important differences between patterns of illness reported during the pandemic and those seen during seasonal epidemics of influenza.
The age groups affected by the pandemic are generally younger. This is true for those most frequently infected, and especially so for those experiencing severe or fatal illness.
To date, most severe cases and deaths have occurred in adults under the age of 50 years, with deaths in the elderly comparatively rare. This age distribution is in stark contrast with seasonal influenza, where around 90% of severe and fatal cases occur in people 65 years of age or older.

I think if you see the natural history of the disease(the way it goes on)usually we tend to panic initially simply because probably we are in the initial spike when the disease looks progressing rapidly. While in 12-24 weeks we will see plateu when the disease is likely to remain standstill and then the no.cases reported might increase and not the death. So that time our odds may also be same as the western...

you have provided wrong data for europe. in europe, only patients with severe conditions are admitted to hospitals which is the number you provided.actual no. of cases of swine flu in England in week of 23 july were about 1,00,000(100 thousand) and next week 1,10,000.and in england only deaths are 70+(a month ago). is england not in europe. my data can be verified easily by searching on google.
patients are directly provided tamilflu tablets there just by online diagnosis as number of patients there are too much to be tested.

MAY BE U R MISTAKEN.
LOOK THE HISTORY WHEN H1N1 CAME DEATHS ARE EXTREMELY HIGH.
THIS FLU COME ONLY ONCE IN MAX 50 YEARS AVERAGE. AND KILLS MILLIONS. AND FASTEST IN SPREAD.
THIS TIME IT HAS TAKE JUST FEW MONTHS TO SPREAD IN WORLD.
AND UNOFFICIALLY KILLED MORE THEN 3000.
JUST CATCH HERE IS A PERSON INFACTED WITH H1N1 IF DIES DUE TO PNEUMONIA IS NOT CONSIDERED AS DEATH WITH H1N1 IF NOT TESTED.

i think this flu is like spanish flu of 1918.same H1N1 virus, but a different subtype.that virus started in march like swine flu did.in india, spanish flu initially wasn't looking much dangerous but then reached its peak in december and killed millions of people in india.
i fear that if this present swine flu virus gets a little mutation to be tamilflu resistant, then what would be the consequences. history shows us that all these H1N1 type viruses or viruses in other major outbreaks mutated themselves and struck a second wave of infection with much more potential to do damage

I think the private labs will be allowed to do the test in the coming weeks. I read that some labs in Delhi has already been allowed to do the test. Also, Oseltamivir will be allowed to be sold from pharmacies within a few days.

I am having slight soarness in the throat and a chest pain on the left side. I dont have fever & cold. But sometimes in night I feel breatheless. One of my nostrils blocks as soon as I reach home and remains like that and phlegm comes after that regularly. Do you think breathlessness, chest pain and slightly soar throat without fever & cold are initial symptom of Swine flu. I have fatty liver and I am a patient suffering from acute gastroentitis. Do i fall in high risk category patient. Should I go to swine flu testing centre?
Please suggest.

Useless to say WE will see more deaths then other country
Temiflu is only solution against it
But in very early stage even any antibiotics will do batter.
People should be faster in treatment (TREATMENTS SHULD BE IN FEW HOURS AND NOT DAYS) once they get cought for h1n1 instead of waiting for official test results
Common death in swinflu is due to liquid and blood in lungs due to pneumonia or u can say your own body killing it self
When h1n1 spreads body cells try to kill all cells infects by virus but this finally turns in to killing lung cells.
And thus allowing body liquid into lung through HOLES IN LUNGS.
You will not die if virus spreads in your hand or leg. But when it spreads in lungs you will die.
It depends how MUCH time virus takes to approach lungs.
Remember body will not just wait for virus to spread it will start fighting. What worries here is late entry of large amount of antibodies.
Body need to generate the disease-killing proteins thus making antibodies. Which may take 5-7 days.
By this time if h1n1 is slow in spread or fails to approach lungs u won.
So its useless to find testing center or good hospitals what u need to do is to take fast action (antibiotics) and give your body some more time.
This time virus is much faster then our body's defense system.
this is only possible if u slow it down. and this is only by taking antibiotics in very very early stage.
not few days early but immediately just next to few hours from infections.
FORCE GOVT. TO GIVE TEMIFLU IMMEDIATELY TO PEOPLE INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR TEST RESULTS. DO NOT WORRY FOR THINKING VIRUS WILL GET MUTANT TO THIS MEDICINE. ALL RUBBISH NEW MEDICINE DEVELOPS WITH ALL NEW VIRUSES. THIS IS JUST H1N1 AND NOT H5N1. WHICH IF COMES WILL KILL NEARLY ALL (EVEN ANIMALS)
