@Kamakshi : I dont think so there is any appointment system. But i do believe that Bharat Scans , Roypapettah branch is testing for H1N1 too. SO probably you have some private centres sprouting out now..which will reduce the burden on the Govt. centres and ease it for the common man too.

No you dont need to at present. However visit your family physician or local doctor and get some medications for your condition. Hopefully it should get better, but despite taking medications if your condition worsens, then I believe its better you get a preliminary blood test to rule out malarial or typhoid or leptospiral fever and then you could opt for an H1N1 test

No pls dont do that unless and until your doctor advices you too. Moreover, if your fever is low grade (Between 99-100 deg Farenheit) and your respiratory symptoms subside or show signs of relief after taking the medications, then you probably might have a common flu infection or pharyngitis. So better wait n watch

1) My son 5 years old had continuous vomitting on last wednesday night. (That night he had idlies from hotel). so, we took him to paediatrician, she advised him to take Emeset twice and "Norflox 100mg DT" twice a day for 5 days. Vomitting stopped after Emeset taken, but had mild fever 99 on the same day evening. We gave him calpol syrup at night one time. No fever from that time onwards. He is still taking "Norflox". But he is getting pain on stomach sometimes. He is having little vomitting sensation & little cough, no stuffy/running nose. The doctor also advised us to undergo some test like Urine routine, culture and motion routine and culture, becoz, he is having worm problems. Does he need to take any more test?
2) My wife is pregnant (3 mths), she used to vomit daily (but not frequently), but on last friday had continuous vomitting, gynic doctor gave "Emeset" inj, and now she has little vomitting with sensation and she has little joining pains. No fever. She is taking "Ascoril" syrup to control mucus. Kindly advice.

I think he would be OK by few days.May be he had a gastropathic viral infection and now probably its the NORFLOX side effect of pain in abdomen. JUST RELAX...
Keep consulting your pediatrician for treatment.

Keep a check on your body temperature and make sure that your temp and symptoms of respiratory disturbance or flu like symptoms (if they do exist) do not increase in their severity. Secondly were you in close proximity or contact with the individuals who were from Pune? if not i dont think there is any necessity to get worried as of now. Pls consult your family physician and get a proper set of medication for your condition.

Pls keep a watch over your temp and make sure it is measured. Consult your family or regular physician and start on a course of antibiotics if the sore throat and symptoms of phlegm or collection in your chest are more.
If your body temp is consistently above 100 or 101 deg Farenheit and if the symptoms increase in severity. Then I suggest you get urself tested or else..wait for 48 hrs.
In the mean time, it is better you avoid crowded places and avoid close proximity contact with children, elderly citizens or pregnant women. And use a disposable surgical mask worn around ur nose and mouth.
Take care sir.

ACCORDING TO THE MOST LATEST GUIDELINES BY GOVT.OF INDIA
* Patients with mild fever plus cough / sore throat with or without body ache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting will be categorised as Category-A. They do not require Oseltamivir and should be treated for the symptoms mentioned above. The patients should be monitored for their progress and reassessed at 24 to 48 hours by the doctor.
* No testing of the patient for H1N1 is required.
* Patients should confine themselves at home and avoid mixing up with public and high risk members in the family.
SO DO NOT PANIC.....

Pls refer to Dr.Maulik's advice. Like he has said, there is no need for you to panic sir. This is a season for the common seasonal flu, and other communicable diseases that we have been seeing so commonly all through the years. And this must obviously be one of them. But the key is wait and watch. Consult your family or area doctor and start on medications if necessary. In the mean time, also pls avoid smoking or drinking ice cold water directly from the cooler or the fridge...cos this is a season to drink so and this alone can induce the severity of your symptoms of the common flu.
Pls do post again if your symptoms are persistent after starting your medications. Take care Sir

Pls give Crocin and watch her temperature. But I feel that if she has respiratory disturbances like cough, sore throat, then pls consult your doctor and make sure whether she needs antibiotic coverage or not. If so, pls start her on antibiotics as adviced/prescribed by the doctor and wait and watch. Pls do the said and watch her for the next 48-72 hrs. If her symptoms increase in severity even after taking her medications (which include antibiotics compulsorily) then cross check again with your regular physician and take her to the nearest H1N1 testing centre.
Bottom line : Meet your doctor
- Start her on antibiotics and antipyretics
- Watch her for the next 2 days
She will become alright..if she doesnt , then pls follow the instructions.
God bless Sir

Hi ,
I have cold for past 5 days and sore throat for past two days. For sore throat , I had milk with turmeric powder and pepper powder yesterday night and today morning. Now I have diarrhoea. I don't have any other symptoms like body aches or vomiting or cough. Do I need to test for swine flu . I don't have fever also. I am scared becoz of diarrhoea from today morning. Tell me whether I need to consult a doctor.

Nothing to worry at all. The diarrhoea is probably due to some reason but certainly not due to a viral infection. If you have NO FEVER, NO Respiratory disturbance and NO Flu like symptoms. You NEED NOT TEST yourself for H1N1, consult your family / regular doctor and get treated for your loose stools.
You could end up getting dehydrated due to whcih indirectly you could have a temporary flaw in your immunity and this is not advisable at this juncture of time.
Take care Sir

Dear Dr.Saravanan,
I had very mild sore throat (I had to clear my throat frequently, even when not required to speak) since 18th of this month. I consulted my family physician on 26th when the soreness increased. He prescribed some medicines (antibiotics), but, it did not go away fully. I also developed mild cough and very mild chest pain when coughing.I went back to him on 28th and he changed the medicines, to be taken for three more days. I was alright for a day and since today (1st Sep), I have slight pain in the throat as well as pain in the chest when I cough. Do you advise that I should go for H1N1 test?

From your history , I believe that you have been having an Upper respiratory tract infection since the 18th and this has progressed to your lower respiratory tract as well of now. I need some more info Mr.Sharath, so that I could help you out as of now.
(i) What were the antibiotics you were on initially? What were the antibiotics you were on later?
(ii) Did you have your XRay taken and reviewed by a Pulmonologist or a Respiratory physician or an MD Gen Medicine or a General practitioner?
(iii) You have not mentioned anything about your fever. Did you or did you not have fever Sir? If you did, was the temperature rising gradually or was it of low grade? Was it on and off or only in the nights? Was it associated with rigor (Shivers)
I would suggest you the following :-
Have an XRay taken and reviewed by a specialist
If your symptoms dont reduce by the next 24-48 hrs, I suggest you go to the nearest H1N1 testing centre and get yourself checked.
Take care Sir and be safe! God bless

Thanks for your kind reply, Dr. Saravanan.
I have had no fever, even though feeling feverish. The temp. has been normal throughout.
In the first instance, the physician gave me Vecip-500 (2 a day for 3 days), along with Alired-D and Meftal. In the second instance, he gave me Roxid-300, along with Allercet-DC, Diclomal and asked me to chew Alex (for cough). In addition, he also prescribed Solvental syrup to be taken 10 ml. thrice a day. No X-RAy was advised and taken. Today, I have an irritation in throat and need to clear it very frequently. With increased frwquency of cpugh, I get chest pain with rigorous coughing.I hope have provided you with the information that you are looking for. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

You have been prescribed antiasthmatics , antihistamine and an antibiotic. Pls take it and watch for the next day or so. Probably appears like an acute throat infection. Keep an eye over your temperature. If it keeps rising steadily , I would suggest you to get yourself tested for H1N1 after a day or two.

Seems like your making steady progress and recovery!!! Of course the abdominal aches could be due to a slightly higher dosage of the drugs. Anyway, you ought to be knowing that almost all the drugs have a minimal side effect. Abd pain, nausea, etc being some of the commonest of them!
Anyway Guess you dont need to panic with respect to H1N1. So pls do relax and God bless!

Dr Saravanan,
Thanks a lot for your valuable advise.. I was in a panic when it all started i feel i am recovering gradually. But, I have a slight whistle like sound when i breathe. Though it was very less i don have any problem in breathing other then that slight sound. I went to stanley hospital today morning as i feel i get the best medication only in government hospitals rather then private. There they gave new medication shall i follow that as else the medication which i had itself is enough????
Between, It will be very useful for all readers if you tell the public diff between common flu and swine flu??
Since cough, fever, chill are all very common kinf of symptoms ppl are clueless to which we have to take care of ??
And also, Please brief us the treatment given to all tested positive cases?? Is it deadly virus or once tested positive what all a person must do recover fully???
Thanks a ton in advance for your replies Doc,

Mr.Arun, you may continue and complete the course of your previous medications IF your symptoms are going off gradually or if you are at present asymptomatic. (Good to hear that people are entrusting the Govt. institutions for health care as well, a true sign of progression)
Regarding the second part of your question , This is sole core reason for every single individual to be panicky. The reason being that H1N1 is just another mutated form of the common influenza virus that cause common flu in humans since time immemorial. Its just that this strain of influenza A has mutated and reassigned itself with antigenic strains of the american and eurasian swine, avian virus and other strains of human influenza virii. Scientists actually named it the 'Quadruplet Reassortant' virus!! Well this is for a brief insight into the technical history.
Since it belongs to the same family, the symptomatic manifestations are more or less similar to the common flu. The only difference being either in the severity or intensity of the symptoms and the fact being that this virus spreads faster than any other known microbial infection. And the fact that these virii affect the lungs directly, usually requiring people with a moderately severe infection to be treated in an intensive care setup.
Another fact that the scientists say is that they have a suspicion that this virus mutates itself quite faster than expected and this is a cause of concern.
As far as what a common man is concerned. Pls note the following :-
If u have flu like symptoms WITH FEVER (Above 100 deg Farenheit or so) which either does not subside with medications or WHICH SUBSIDES INITIALLY and then bounces back 12-24 hrs later with even MORE SEVERITY than the initial spell, then it is important you get yourself tested for H1N1.
There is no specific gross symptom that can help you realise you have H1N1, and this is a sad and difficult fact that has to be accepted by one and all.
Keep in mind a simple graph (Symptoms versus No.of days)
If in your symptoms seem to gradually rise or initially dip down (after taking medications) and rise up more steeply, then it is a wakeup call to get yourself checked.
Sorry but i have no more time as of now. Will answer the rest of your queries today evening. Hope this was of some use to you and all the other readers as well.
Be safe everyone and God bless!

Thank you so much Mr.Arun, i'm very humbled by your acknowledgement, but the real thing is that I am just doing my job to the society. What I am doing is just a nano fraction of percentage that others are doing. Anyway Mr.Arun, though you are asymptomatic as of now, pls do consult your family physician or an MD (Respiratory medicine) regarding that whistling sound when u breath. That would be my sincere advice to you. To check it out now itself. Pls do take care of yourself and God bless you!

I have a slight fever for last 36 hours or so, and it is usually supressed with Crocin. I have no cough or throat irritation at all.
Is cold/cough a "must have" symptom of Swine Flu? If so, how early does it manifest itself?

Hello Mr.Sandeep. First let me apologise if there was any delay in my reply. I am actually replying this through my mobile. Well, as far as what you had mentioned, I am happy you have come out with details as specific as possible regarding your treatment. But what i would like to know is that have you taken any blood tests or sputum culture tests?
If not, my advice would be that you could kindly request your doctor to recommend you and your mother for a Complete Hemogram (Including a Platelet count ) and test you for MP/MF (Malarial parasite / Micro filaria) and a Widal test also. Of course it may seem irrelevant to some, but this is the period of seasonal diseases and let us not take any chances at all.
As far as the cough is concerned - Is it productive or dry? If it is productive , I strongly suggest, you go for a sputum culture and senstivity test - This will show you what organisms are present in the respiratory tract and what drugs (antibiotics) they are resistant or sensitive to.
So it might be that you and your mother have strains of infection that might be resistant to the antibiotic you are on.
So the final thing is that pls Consult your family physician regarding the blood test and sputum tests and a Chest XRay if necessary.
Pls do take care and God bless. Dont worry Sandeep, everything will be alright, its just a fear that causes the panic to rise.
Thank you

Thanks very Much Dr.Saravanan and my apologies for replying you very late . we havent done any blood tests as of now. mine was dry cough wheras my mothers was productive cough(with sputum).
As of latest update iam feeling perfectly fine with cough also subsidised, with a occasional rare dry cough. Thanks to your wishes and support. And of my mother she is also fine, cough has subsiised a little bit , but still seems to have productive cough which worsens at night or early in the day .
Dr. Saravanan as per your advice still you advise for blood test? and any advice for HINI test?
Thanks a lot for your reply , Iam very much humbled by your service to humanity.

This could probably the seasonal 'Non-swineflu' flu.I would request you Sir, to consult your family or local physician and start on a course of antibiotics with antipyretics. If you dont get relieved of your symptoms or if they persist again, then I suggest you request your physician to send you for a blood test for Typhoid, Malaria or Lepto.
Wishing you an early recovery
God bless

Well, thank you for the acknowledgement Mr.Mishra,I thank you too for your comments.
Firstly, based on your symptoms, my advice would strongly be that you be EXAMINED by your family physician or local physician. You could probably have an ordinary pharyngitis or even a tonsilitis to start with. So pls do not be hasty to go for a swine flu test as of now. And Combiflam is only an antipyretic/analgesic. Probably helps you with the minimal fever and bodyache. But it is not an antibiotic, so pls dont take too much of it since it can induce severe gastritits.
Secondly, I do believe,(If my sources are right) that the Govt. is still doing the H1N1 test for FREE!! at all Govt. authorised centres all over India. They incorporated the help of private diagnostic labs at that period to help with the huge mass of panicked citizens.
Well for a starter, this website has all the details you need city-wise. Anyway Here is the hyd centres of testing.

My suggestion is to get a second opinion of another doctor and probably change to her antibiotics and observe. Ask her to gargle with salt and warm water too or Oral gargle preparations available at your local drug store.
Also, if she's given antipyretics (like paracetamol or its combinations) and still it hasnt come down, then after 24 hrs or so i'd suggest you to go to the nearest H1N1 testing centre. But dont be hasty. Tread carefully.
Take care and God bless

I had a throat infection on 23th August with mild cough and cold.I was not sneezing much and i had no fever. I contacted the Physician immediately and they given me antibiotics(AMOXICILINE 625mg) for 5 days. I was feeling gud on the next day itself.I have completed the course and than again consulted the physician as i was feeling bit cough. He suggested me that infection is improved a lot but there is bit infection which will take some time to recover. Than 2 days back (on 4th September) i felt sore throat again with stuffing nose. I do feel that i have bit cough but not able to coughing out. I consulted the ENT specialist and he given me some more antibiotics but suggested that as there is no fever still no need to go for H1N1 test. What u say are these symptoms are good enough to go for H1N1 test? I am bit worried as i heard that Tamiflue is effective only if given in first 24/48 hours. Should I go for H1N1 test.?
I will be thankful to you for immediate reply
Thanks.

DO NOT PANIC.
1.)you are going through an upper respiratory tract infection and there are atlease thousands of cause for that and H1N1 is only one of them.
2) you do not qualify for TEST nor TEMIFLU as per govt. guidelines.
so do not think too much...
just do saline gargles take STEAM inhalation. follow advise of your doctors.

oops oops oops...
WIDAL TEST has to be carried out only after 7 days of FEBRILE ILLNESS & not before..! It could be wrong in interpretetion. Now since you have all things done wait and get a physician- MD(MEDICINE)examine you and follow his/her guidelines instead of your own thinking.

Kindly wait-Do not Panic. Any illness takes its own course. you need to continue following advise for at least 48-72 hrs. Drugs are not MAGIC which change scene immediately. It seems there is an upper respiratory tract infection. Most commonly viral.
As per govt. guidelines there is no need to test neither the antiviral medication-temiflu.
Keep treating symptomatically ie. REST-PARACETAMOL FOR FEVER-ANTI HISTAMINICS-COUGH SUPPRESSANTS.
JUST WAIT & OBSERVE FOR SOME TIME.

Hi
My co-sister was having fever and cough for last 5 days. The fever was intermittent, not continuous. She also had vomitting. She was having breathing problem for last two days, but today she is feeling little better. She took a screening test in Bharath Scans for H1N1 which turned negative. She was diagonised and was told yesterday that she is having symptoms of pnemonia. She has been prescribed with some antibiotics. Can anybody let me know if this could be H1N1 and what else is the better option? Sometimes even educated people get confused when it comes for themselves!!

Mr.Narayanan, its important that she is seen by a physician (MD,General Medicine) or a pulmonologist. Secondly, pls dont confuse yourself with H1N1, of course pneumonia is one of the repurcussions of H1N1 influenza A but not this one, since the test has turned out negative. Her pneumonia could be due to a various number of other reasons which can be filtered and concluded only after certain blood tests and cultures, bronchoscopy if necessary, PFT (pulmonary function tests) and/or Spirometry...etc.
So, as you can see..its better you see the specialists, as mentioned earlier.
Wishing your co-sister an early and uneventful recovery! Take care sir and God bless

I contacted King Institute, Guindy, Chennai for testing my wife as advised by Dr Jayasree Narasimhan. The operator shouted at me saying that they no longer do the test and that I should go to Govt. Hospital. When I contact Tondiarpet Govt Hospital they informed that I should contact only King Institute in Guindy. Each one is passing the responsibility to the other. More over the telephone operators are very rude and do not answer properly and put the phone down. When Swine flu is a dangerous deceasse, one need to get the correct information. Such attitude on the part of the Government employees will not help the public in any way. The Govsernment authorities should look into this matter seriously and advise the Government hopsital staff and testing laboratories to be polite, more information and public frienndly.
