6 Ways to Increase Your Immunity Against Swine Flu
Taking good care of your health can reduce or eliminate your risk of contracting the flu. The key is to keep your immune system strong by following these simple guidelines.Lose Weight: New data has suggested that obesity, especially extreme obesity (BMI over 40), raises swine flu victims' chance of dying. The study, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, looked at the cases of swine flu patients at a Michigan hospital, all of whom had to be placed on ventilators due to the severity of their illness. Being overweight reduces your immunity and therefore chances of contraction increases while recovery too becomes difficult. Learn simple steps to start losing weight.
Exercise: Blood circulation is required for your immune system to perform at its best for you. Spend 20-30 minutes daily by raising your heart beat to 130 beats per minute. Any form of exercise - running, weight training, playing sports like squash, tennis help.
Eliminate Sugar From your Diet: Apart from a number of health problems like cancer, sugar is also responsible for faster aging and reducing your immunity against diseases. Avoid all forms of white sugar starting today.
Stop Junk Food: Similar to Sugar, junk food has an immediate, weakening effect on your immune system.
Get Plenty of Sleep: Too little sleep may reduce levels of leptin, possibly causing people to gain weight, develop diabetes, and weaken your immune system. Getting around 7 hours of qood quality sleep is sufficient. Note that sleeping more than 8 hours is dangerous to your health.
Relax: If you feel overwhelmed by stress, your body will not have the reserves it needs to fight infection. Long-term stress causes excessive wear on the body and activates a deterioration of the immune system.
One more tip from our readers, Dr. Lakshmi Vasan. Eat nutritious food including lot of citrus fruits. Thanks Dr. Vasan.
Last but not least, keep washing your hands frequently.

EVERY FLU VIRUS MULTIPLIES WHEN BODY IS SUBJECTED TO COLD CLIMATE FOR LONG PERIOD E.G WHILE WORKING IN AN AIRCONDITIONED OFFICE, travelling long distances in a/c coaches, aeroplanes, sleeping in a/c rooms, . departments should take care that the temperature of office/ a/c coaches/ aeroplanes does not fall too low, rather it should be kept at the higher side of comfort zone.if a person or his dependent has a has a running nose, body should be warmed by putting off the a/c, wearing additional clothes, lying down in bed , cover with a blanket till such time that he or she starts feeling warm. the warmth arrests the multiplication of virus in the body. growth of the virus should be arrested at the earliest by above method. in a/c offices those who feel more cold , should carry extra clothes& should not feel shy in wearing them in office if that makes them comfortable.

I am having throat pain since 10th August. I consulted an 2 ENT specialist and today I just completed course of anti-virals of 7 days (If adding medicine given by first ENT specialist it becomes 7 days of anti-virals + 5 days of normal medicine). But I am not feeling much improvement. In fact today I am feeling nose itching which could be early sign of running nose. Tomorrow morning, I am going to ENT for review. I may be sounding panic but should I get swine flu test. It should not be problem because SRL has started testing it and one fortis hospital is 3 kms away from home. Please advise.

OFFICIAL GOVT.GUIDELINES says
Patients with mild fever plus cough / sore throat with or without body ache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting will be categorised as Category-A.
They do not require Oseltamivir and should be treated for the symptoms mentioned above. The patients should be monitored for their progress and reassessed at 24 to 48 hours by the doctor.
• No testing of the patient for H1N1 is required.
• Patients should confine themselves at home and avoid mixing up with public and high risk members in the family.
SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PANIC...

I would not burden people to count the nutrients and calories. Its a difficult proposition. To have an efficient immunity system one can do himself favour by resorting to:
* Food at home, clean water and clean air in a park in the morning,
* Having meals at regular/appointed times and spending some quality time while eating,
* Adequate rest/sleep,
* Positive outlook/attitude towards life,
* Recreation, including watching comedy films/TV serial,
* Doing good to others as far as possible,
* A table spoonful of honey, some sprouts of green lentil (Moong dal). It would provide all the nutrients required for a healthy body, mind and soul.Influenza or no Influenza.

No. You do not have to cook either honey or sprouts of green lentils.
You can put honey on the sprouts and masticates till the combination becomes almost liquid so that it dribbles down the throat on its own.THIS WAY YOU WILL DERIVE MAXIMUM NUTRITION.
Alternatively you can put some flakes of raw onion, a little tomato and some salt and spice (to your taste, but masticate as mentioned above.
Vitamins and minerals in green lentil multiplies many times at the time of germination.Honey has amino acids, which directly go to blood. You do not have to even digest that.
Also when you chew on the combination, visualise that you are deriving max. nutrition. It would do wonder, both in health and disease. All the best.

Thanks for visiting my site Dr Singh :)
Unfortunately not very surprised at your comments knowing fully well how much of nutrition is covered in a typical MBBS syllabus anywhere in the world; No offense.
With due respect may I assert (lest the readers may get misguided) we all need a wide range of foods to cover the entire spectrum of 120+ nutrients & also need to avoid lots of so-called healthy foods because they have bad microvita.
I do agree with your other recommendations though; A bit of spirituality won't hurt either... just adding to your list :)

Hi,
Everywhere there is mention that quote...unquote "Alcohol is the best hand sanitizer for all ills" !!!. I reckon by alcohol one means IPA (i.e. 70% isopropyl alcohol). Is there any clinical proven records for it's effectiveness as a VIRUCIDE or SPORICIDE. What we need here against H1N1 is a a sanitizer against VIRUS i.e a VIRUCIDE and teh world's best known user-friendly chemical is food grade stabilised hydrogen peroxide at 2to3% strength W/W in DM water. Those who are keen to learn more on VIRUCIDE please contact Mr. Percy Pavri Bangalore 9845698378 and/or Ramgopal, Bangalore 9916589680, Dr.Chaitanya Hyderabad 09395035763. Here are some easy steps you can take to tackle a flu virus of any kind, including swine flu. It is not necessary to follow all the steps at once. You can pick and choose a combination of remedies that suit you best. However, if you are already suffering from flu, these measures can help only up to an extent. And, if you have been infected by H1N1, visiting a hospital and staying in solitary confinement is a must.
1. Have five duly washed leaves of Tulsi (known as Basil in English; medicinal name Ocimum sanctum) everyday in the morning. Tulsi has a large number of therapeutic properties. It keeps throat and lungs clear and helps in infections by way of strengthening your immunity.
2. Giloi (medicinal name Tinospora cordifolia) is a commonly available plant in many areas. Take a one-foot long branch of giloi, add five to six leaves of Tulsi and boil in water for 15-20 minutes or long enough to allow the water to extract its properties. Add black pepper and sendha (salt used during religious fasts), rock or black salt, or Misri (crystalised sugar like lumps to make it sweet) according to taste. Let it cool a bit and drink this kadha (concoction) while still warm. It will work wonders for your immunity. If giloi plant is not available, get processed giloi powder from Hamdard or others, and concoct a similar drink once a day.
3. A small piece of camphor (kapoor) approximately the size of a tablet should be taken once or twice a month. It can be swallowed with water by adults while children can take it along with mashed potatoes or banana because they will find it difficult to have it without any aides. Please remember camphor is not to be taken everyday, but only once each season, or once a month.
4. Those who can take garlic, must have two pods of raw garlic first thing in the morning. To be swallowed daily with lukewarm water. Garlic too strengthens immunity like the earlier measures mentioned.
5. Those not allergic to milk, must take a glass of hot or lukewarm milk every night with a small measure of haldi (turmeric).
6. Aloe vera (gwarpatha) too is a commonly available plant. Its thick and long, cactus-like leaves have an odourless gel. A teaspoon gel taken with water daily can work wonders for not only your skin and joint pains, but also boost immunity.
7. Take homeopathic medicines — Pyrogenium 200 and Inflenzium 200 in particular — five tablets three times a day, or two-three drops three times a day. While these are not specifically targeted at H1N1 either, these work well as preventive against common flu virus.
8. Do Pranayam daily (preferably under guidance if you are already not initiated into it) and go for morning jog/walk regularly to keep your throat and lungs in good condition and body in fine fettle. Even in small measures, it will work wonders for your body’s resistance against all such diseases which attack the nose, throat and lungs, besides keeping you fit.
9. Have citrus fruits, particularly Vitamin C rich Amla (Indian gooseberry) juice. Since fresh Amla is not yet available in the market (not for another three to four months), it is not a bad idea to buy packaged Amla juice which is commonly available nowadays.
10. Last but not the least, wash your hands frequently every day with soap and warm water for 15-20 seconds; especially before meals, or each time after touching a surface that you suspect could be contaminated with flu virus such as a door handle or a knob/handle, especially if you have returned from a public place or used public transport. Alcohol-based hand cleaners should be kept handy at all times and used until you can get soap and warm water.

Some tips for prevention from AIIMS doctor, I received them in my mail box, Would like to share with all.
Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms.
Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing thenose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral
population.
Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

No. You should not take any medication without consulting doctor. Flu is a viral disease and anti-biotic doesn't work on it. Take some precautions like
1. Cover your mouth/nose with a double layered clean hankie during your travel, especially if you find somebody sneezing and/or coughing. Virus can pass through the masks/hankies, so it wont be 100% protective, but something is better than nothing.
2. Carry hand sanitizer. Clean your hands after you touch surfaces in public places.
3. Drink at least 3 liters of water a day.
4. Do light exercise.
5. Have balanced diet.
6. Keep yourself away from stress and tension :)

swine flu is still not a problem in Garhwal region of uttaranchal but this region is close to delhi. People from this reason frequently travel to delhi. this region not equipped with either diagnostic nor therapeuptic facility.so suggestion for such places to control the disease is highly solicited.

Dear Doctorsab,
Yes, help is at hand. If you are serious please reply to my address. ramgopal1941@google.com
On receipt of your reply I shall send you details on fumigation sanitising (non-fomaldehyde/prmanganate process) process which is userfriendly with no need to evacuate employees during fogging with a nebulizer.
Look forward to your response.
