August 8th Update: 71 New Cases

Seventy one confirmed cases of swine flu have been reported in India today. The total number of positive cases in the country rises to 782. The number of cured and discharged cases stands at 511. As per the health department two deaths have been confirmed. However newspapers report 4 deaths.

Except for one case in Pune, a 34/M who travelled from UK, all other 33 are local cases most of them reporting social or school contacts. One among the two cases reported in Mumbai is a 6 year old female who travelled from Manchester/ London.

The other case in Mumbai is a 53 year old female who was referred to an identified Government health facility in Mumbai on the night of 7th August 2009 with acute respiratory distress from a private hospital. She was tested positive today afternoon. She expired today at about 4.30 PM.

Of the 13 cases in Delhi, two have travel history [an eleven year old female who travelled from Singapore and thirteen year old male who travelled from Manchester. All other cases are contact of earlier reported positive cases.

The case admitted in the identified health facility in Faridabad is a 33 year old male who travelled from Italy transiting Abu Dhabi and self reported to identified health facility. The case from Amritsar is a 26 year old male who travelled from Dubai and identified during screening at Delhi Airport.

Seven cases have been reported today from Chennai. Of these three are travel related cases: a 26 year old male and 30 year old male both reaching Chennai from Dubai and identified at the airport screening. The third travel related is a seven year old female who travelled from Jeddah, self reporting to identified health facility.

There are 10 cases reported today from Bangalore. There is no history of travel in them. One case reported in Mangalore is a contact of the earlier reported positive case admitted in Mangalore. The other two had travelled to that city from Delhi and Hyderabad.
